Out at my mom’s farm in Alton, Virginia she has very few neighbors; she is out in the boonies. Her closest neighbor has 1,000 acres with quite a storied past. He has two homes, many outbuildings, a couple of slave dwellings and a tenant house. The house her neighbor lives in creeps me out more than the Civil War Field Hospital. I will save his house for another blog post.
Her neighbor, Bill, no longer owns the Civil War house. He sold it along with two acres to a couple who have completely restored it beautifully! Before he sold it no one lived in it and he would let me go in it whenever I wanted to take pictures or to ghost hunt. And ghost hunt we did!!!
One weekend my nineteen year old son, Taylor, had a friend staying at the farm with him. We made a plan to ghost hunt that night. There was no electricity to the house so we went down earlier in the day to decide where everyone would be stationed and to get a feel for the place. During that daytime visit, Claire, my then six year old was with us. She and I were standing side by side in the foyer. I immediately felt a blast of cold air. I turned around to look behind me and Claire started screaming that she wanted to get out of there. Why?
Someone just lifted the hair on my head! She said it felt like someone gently lifted her hair and dropped it. This child has NEVER been scared of much of anything so this was surprising. We all left at that point.
During the Civil War this house on their property was used as a Civil War field hospital. The smaller backside was built during the Revolutionary War. The front portion was built a few years before the Civil War. Back then many people were called upon to turn their homes into hospitals. The front portion of this house was the hospital. The back was the doctor’s office and his sleeping quarters.
Usually when we are heading to Bill’s property we take a land mule. It’s a small motorized farm vehicle for those that don’t know. Since it was dark we decided to take my car. A little tidbit about that car…..it was pretty much brand new. Only had it six months and not bragging, but it is kind of relevant to the story….it was a $95,000 Mercedes Benz AMG. Lol. Yes, I took that ghost hunting. My husband didn’t know it, but he sure did after!!! I HAD to tell him because of something that happened.
It was pitch dark in the house except for a couple of flashlights we had, my camera flash and our phones. I picked the doctor’s office to sit in…….ALL BY MYSELF. I can honestly say I wasn’t scared. My son chose a front room, and his friend chose a downstairs bedroom. We all wanted to stay on one floor at first so we wouldn’t make noises upstairs.
I decided to talk to the doctor. I was doing an audio recording as I talked.
“Are you here, doctor? I’m sitting here at your desk. (his original desk was still in the house!) I’m not here to cause any trouble, I just want to talk to you. Can you say something to let me know you are here?”
At that point on the recording you hear me say….What in the world was that? At the time I remember hearing a faint sound or word being said. On the recording you hear a man let out a deep sigh and it sounded like it was right behind me.
At that point we all decided to go upstairs. We decided to do this together because earlier in the day the boys went up there by themselves and a lightbulb hanging from the ceiling seemed to sway on its own. We wanted to test it out to see if us walking around caused it. This was the only time we all felt uneasy. It was a small back staircase. This wasn’t in the main house, it was the smaller back portion of the house. Once upstairs I turned on a flashlight and the lightbulb was completely still. We jumped around, nothing, it never moved. My son’s friend knocked on the ceiling. A few seconds later we heard a knock back to us.
I was video taping all of this action upstairs. All three of us started feeling kind of dizzy and a bit nauseous, almost like motion sickness. On the video you see this orb thing fly from the wall towards me and kind of went around me. (I have the video somewhere and will try to find it.) Right after that the CRAZIEST thing happened……All of our phones died, all flashlights died, we had nothing!!! Not exaggerating at all. We were feeling around in the dark trying to get the hell out of there!
We raced out to my car and I immediately locked all of the doors and started the car up. First thing, my lights wouldn’t turn on. I had no lights at all. WTH??? Put the car in reverse to back up, my rear camera wasn’t working. Hmmmm. Had to drive the 3/4 mile back to the farm on a narrow two lane road with no lights. Started driving and my CHECK ENGINE light came on. At that point it was no longer WTH, it was WTF???!!!! My husband is going to DIE!!!!!!!!!!!
We got back to the farm and we were rambling a mile a minute telling my mom what happened. And then we realized we left the house unlocked. Oh holy hell. We have to go back!!!! We plug our phones up so we would have a phone in case we needed one when we went back. My phone was at 75% when it mysteriously turned off. When I plugged it up it turned on and still at 75%.
My mom drove us back in her suv. The boys and I went in to lock the house up and just for the heck of it we sat together for a minute to see if we could hear anything……we didn’t. But when we went back outside to go to the farm, my mom had flipping left us there!!!! lol. She was actually hiding across the street to scare us. IT WORKED!!!
When we went back to the farm I decided to start my car up hoping it would be back to normal so I wouldn’t have to make that phone call!!!!! Could you imagine that, “So, I took the car to a haunted civil war house and now it’s totally screwed up and I’m scared to drive it the hour home on the back roads where I have little to no cell service.” lol.
Started it up and car was completely normal!!! Just to be on the safe side I took it to Mercedes that Monday morning when I got home and they hooked it up to diagnostics…..nothing wrong. When I did tell my husband I took it ghost hunting he was more concerned that I drove it on the gravel road to the neighbor’s farm. Lol. Legitimate concern!!!
Do I believe the house is haunted? I definitely heard something on the recording and it wasn’t one of us. The upstairs definitely made us all feel kind of sick at the same time and that’s when our phones all died. There is no explanation for what happened with my car. My car was parked near that room. I never had that issue again with that car. Was it a fluke? Who knows.
When I think about the Civil War and what those soldiers had to have gone through back then at a field hospital with no anesthesia. It is hard to fathom.
Would I ghost hunt again in there? Yes, but I wouldn’t take any fancy cars!
